The Self of the Therapist: A Weekly Process Group
for Associates and Students in Training
Group facilitators Jaya Ramesh and Kristin Beck are psychodynamic, attachment-focused private practice therapists and group leaders in Seattle. They are both in their own process groups.
This group will be a developmental anchor for associates and students in training, a space to build self-awareness, navigate relational feedback, and re-train old behavior tendencies in real time. In an era of the massive commodification of therapy, we will attend to clinical presence and relational rigor, appreciating the complexity of the human experience and the growth of the clinician.
Weekly, ongoing for students and trainees

*What is a process group?
A process group is a space where you can learn with and from other people to understand your own and others’ patterns of thought and behavior. Instead of discussing outside problems, members explore how they relate to others in the group, emotions that arise in real time and explore patterns of communication, conflict, and connection. Think of it as a live social laboratory that focuses on the here-and-now interactions between members, rather than a fixed agenda or specific topic.
Why join?
It provides you with an opportunity to increase self-awareness by:
Learning about the roles you take in life
Obtaining valuable feedback
Experimenting with new ways of being and relating to others
Feeling a connection to others, a sense of universality
Why join as an associate/student?
Being a therapist is more than the modalities, theories and clinical interventions we learn in graduate school. It is about presence and the relationship we build with the client. Sadly, clinical presence is not often taught in schools. Process groups are excellent spaces to learn about yourself in relationship to others and understand how others experience you. Shifting from expert to participant gives you insight into the experience of clients. You will become aware of your interpersonal blindspots, which will also show up in your work with clients. You learn to tolerate emotional intensity, which is critical to when clients have big feelings in the room, sometimes directed at you! You learn to give and receive feedback. And maybe most importantly, process groups support the authentic you to show up, which is so essential in working with clients.
